German-Hungarian defence in Óbuda XII. 1944-I. 1945

During the siedge of Budapest, in the northern sector of the front the defenders blocked the roads with barricades and mine fields. The main road in this area was Bécsi út. The building of the Kiscelli castle was the strongpoint of the defence there. The castle situated on a hillside with a good view on teh Bécsi út and the neighburing built-in area. The castle had thick walls, that were protected against artillery shells. So the bulinding was ideal for defeners to make it a strongpoint. Germans set up a dozen ligh machine gun and several heavy machine gun as well in the castle. Some tank also supported the defenders in the castle. Another strong point of the defenders were the 3 store high block of bulindings at the corner of Kiscelli utca and Bécsi út. This block absolutely dominated the main road. This block of bulidings was in close contact with the castle. The defenders in these are was the 15th regiment of the 8th SS calvary division.
The defenders in Óbuda at the Kiscelli castle could stop the soviet forces for a long time. At 30th December 1944 reached teh soviet troops the castle and they oould not seize it until 25th January 1945. It is obviously that during the siege of Budapest Kiscelli castle was one of the heaviest German strongpoint. In Föld utca Soviet heavy artillery took place and fired at the wall of the castle for a long time without any success. The walls were too thick and were protected against the soviet shells. After the unsuccessful attamp of the artillery, pioneer units were the next. They moved to close up to the castle, where they lodge 800 kg dinamit. After that they exploded it and a part of the castle wall collapsed and were in ruins. But the soviet attack followed the explosion repulsed by the Germans who were in the basement of the castle at the time of the explosion. In the next soviet attamp they attack with Molotov coctails. The castle burned down but the German defenders could find safe place under the castle in the underground tunnels and they could again repulse the soviet attack. At last the Soviet forces could seize the castle with an indirect way. They attacked the bulidings around the castle. Soviet troops could seize the three storey buildings at the corner of Bécsi út. After the fall of this strongpoint the defenders of the castle were circle around. The Soviet forces could grab the castle only after the encirclement of it.
